Hi. I will rarely ever write in my own journal. It is much easier and more fun to write in the journals of others. But for those interested...

Hi. Here's a little about me. It is occurring to me as I type that this might sound a lot like a personals ad. Don't worry, I'm not lonely; but if you want to date me, I'll understand.

I'm a bit of a clotheshorse and can't make it past a shoestore without pause. I don't drink coffee, but do wear lots of black (in the Vancouver sort of way, not the gothic way) and I like to stay up late. I tend to spend idle time musing about pop culture in an aloof manner that helps convince me I'm not all-consumed by it. At least enough to know that kitsch isn't a small food preparation assembly from Ikea. My barber once told me I was an attractive man. I wasn't sure how to take it, but chalked it up as a compliment. I usually remember to hold the door for girls but I don't feel that they are particularly obligated to me for doing so. I pretty much get along with everyone, and my mom tells people I'm a nice boy. I think I'm just pretty normal. I have expensive therapy to thank for this. Some people have said I'm neutral territory, kind of like Switzerland, only cute; sort of like those little villages in mini-golf.

I write a lot. Not so often for myself, but frequently for other people. Sometimes a little of myself bursts out, but usually in the most surreptitious way. Some people think I have particularly feminist and particularly structuralist tendancies in critical exposition, which to me seems like an odd mix. This is not deliberate; I'm blaming it on Turgenev and de Beauvoir. I'm taken with fits of poesy from time to time, some of which struggle pseudonomically to the light of day. This, however, is rare and assuredly briefly symptomatic.

It is often said that we look for in other people things that reflect back what we like about ourselves. I do have some oddball friends whom I hope are not too reflective of me. Well, they may be a little reflective, but not in the Hubble telescope sort of way. More like a genuine replacement rearview mirror from GM. It probably isn't fair to be specific about the types of people I like because I'm continually surprised. I'm amazed by the conditions some people put on aquaintance: "I like people who bungie jump, white-water raft, skydive, and trips to the zoo. Must like baseball and have a pet marmot." See, that screws me right there because I don't like baseball.
